The Throwdowns video shoot

We just released our first video! The Throwdowns \"Shake Your Bones\"

A word about the fashion in the video. Erin is wearing Forever 21 jeans, a Volcom belt, boots borrowed from stylist Larissa Williams (LeRue Attelier) and a custom spray-painted & hacked up shirt. Custom & done by her BANDMATES!! Ola, Ian and Kimo spray painted their signature neon green shoes and all of the dancers shoes, Erin’s mic stand, Kimo & Ola’s instrument cables and Ian’s sticks. Everyone’s been asking where to get the shoes, so we’re here to tell you all you need is some white kicks and a can of spray paint! Same for our “Tdowns” green striped shirts, all done DIY style with spray paint, tape and scissors. Hair & Makeup in the Video was done by Gabriella Sydow. To check out our video, click here! COVER ARTIST, GORDO FLORES

Meet Gordo Flores, visual artist behind the cover art of The Throwdowns’ first full-length album, “Legs Of Our Own.”  He is currently based out of Phoenix Arizona, and grew up on Maui alongside  Kimo and Ola. He’s got the islands in his blood and rock n’ roll in his soul, as is clearly evident in the striking artwork he created for the band.  Gordo used multi-media to create the album cover piece. Neon spray paint, conversations with Ola about artistic direction, adding extra details to the tree for Kimo and a bird in the tree for Ian, print outs of Erin’s lyrics – Gordo had his work cut out for him. He pulled it off and we love our cover!! Mahalo Gordo!

We opened for Train at the Blaisedell Arena in December, which was the coolest and here’s why: We set a goal to play Blaisedell by the end of the year, and we did it.

Also cool, hanging out and sharing the stage with Train & Orianthi. Star 101.9 on Oahu are awesome supporters of our band & they chose us to open with Pimpbot (cool guys, go check out their music.) We had our crew with us, our entertainment lawyer Jay-Jay who works with Orianthi too, Jim from ADA and Tony Cano the #1 cool guy from ADA/Warner New York. He does photos for them and their vinyl. And we had Jilly with us and Gabs who is the #1 hair & makeup girl in the galaxy. Cooper in the house just to do our sound.

There’s no way to really describe how cool it is to play in an arena. I think it’s maybe the best feeling in the whole world. Like better than chocolate, and even better than sex really.

We watched the other band’s soundchecks and chatted with the whole crew. The soundguys in Hawai’i are really the best. Super nice, at every big show we’ve played. Summer stopped by with her girlfriends and hung out with us in our backstage tent.

I drank throat coat tea which was a terrible idea because it coated my throat with anti-voice juice. I thought my voice was gonna go out during “Stolen Car”! It didn’t, I just had to concentrate and stop playing guitar for a quick second to make sure I had it under control. Ola gave me this look, like, what the french toast is happening?? LOL!

Tony from ADA took the coolest photos of us, some wicked hair whips from Ola Bola and some big jumps from the Kimobean. And of course, some thunder shots of Idizzy on drums. A bunch of those shots ended up on the cover of ADA’s monthly mag. Super coveted spot, we were honored to be there.

Orianthi is a SHREDDER!  Train are super good and put on a really engaging show. They had everybody under their thumb when they busted out the ukulele for “Hey Soul Sister”.

We always hang out at the merch table to sign stuff and meet & greet, and we met so many cool people at Blaisedell! Lots of kids who are taking music lessons and writing songs. We loved it.

Here’s the final word, a bit of backstage secret knowledge: When you’re the opening band you’re not allowed to go on the “ego risers” at the side of the stage. ;)

Aloha! *Erin

SO WHAT DOES THE NEW RECORD SOUND LIKE?

Fans who found the band’s debut EP, “Don’t Slow Down“, to be “instantly spinnable” will be hooked on the new record after the first listen. “Legs of Our Own” is loaded with singles, yet is a fully-formed, playable album. Lead off single “Stay HI” features Maui’s reggae ambassador Marty Dread, and is burning up on Hawaiian radio. A luscious ode to hot Hawaiian nights, “Stay HI” makes for signature reggae by The Throwdowns; stylishly sassy (a la Katy Perry & Gwen Stefani) with Passion Pit style production, mixed with homegrown reggae beats.
Other key tracks on the record include fan favorite “On the Radio”. Dance-pop with a killer hook, this song is about all-consuming, always fleeting summer love. “Heart Attack”, the band’s full-throttle ode to defeating pressure, encompasses the energy of the band’s notoriously explosive live performances. Floating like a butterfly, stinging like bee, “Swallow Me Whole” is the album closer and the big, stunning power ballad.

Despite opportunities to record the album & shoot their debut music video on the mainland, The Throwdowns chose to keep it local. The production and engineering duties for “Legs Of Our Own” were handled in-house by The Throwdowns’ own guitarist/producer Ola Shaw. Ola has quickly become the “go-to” producer on Maui, taking on the production work for many bands. This year he has worked on tracks from new acts Moth and Arise,  & established names Nuff Said and Marty Dread, to name a few.
